Editor’s note: On Tuesday 3 April 2012 in the afternoon, armed supporters of extremist Deobandi group Sipah-e-Sahaba (also known as Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat ASWJ) stopped several passenger buses on the Karakoram Highway in the Bonar Das area of Chilas, ordered the people to get off, segregated Shia Muslims and then sprayed bullets on them. A large number of Shia Muslims picked out by the SSP-ASWJ gunmen were killed, and their attackers later pushed the bus into a river. Based on some reports, the following religious leaders and elders played a main role in the Chilas massacre: Abdul Wakil Shah, Faizullah, Maulana Abdul Majeed and others. According to reports, the terrorists, who were being protected by training camps Darail and Tareem, executed the Shia passengers by stoning them to death, throwing acid on some of them while others were thrown into the nearby river after their hands and legs were tied up with ropes. Those who did not show or hid their ID cards, were massacred after seeing marks of flagellation on their bodies. Horrifying images of some of the victims are published in a previous post. We urge Pakistan government and army to arrest the killers and award exemplary punishment to them without any delay.

Here is an interview with a Skardu-based educationalist on the recent atrocity that took place in Chilas. This video is an effort to disseminate information about the Shia massacre while the mainstream Pakistani media is completely silent on this issue. There has been absolutely no reporting of the Shia Muslims’ killings by any of the Pakistani news channel or print media. This report contains first-hand information obtained from a source in Skardu who got it directly from the families of those killed in the massacre and the eye witnesses who survived.
