Raza Rumi’s discourse on Pakistan’s Shia Muslims

A few days ago, Raza Rumi (editor of Pak Tea House blog and regular contributor to The Friday Times and Express Tribune) claimed that the notorious military-backed Difa-e-Pakistan Council, a conglomerate of 40 Jihadi-sectarian organizations, also includes Shia representatives in the form of Qazi Niaz Hussain Naqvi of Wafaq-ul-Madaris Shia, and the principal of Jamia al-Muntazir Lahore Hafiz Syed Riaz Hussain Najafi.

Here is a copy of his tweets:

We have confirmed with someone close to Qazi Niaz Hussain Sahab, who has categorically rejected the rumor and termed it ludicrous. He further clarified that neither he, nor Hafiz Riaz Hussain Najafi have ever been associated with the infamous DPC (Difa-e-Pakistan Council), and they do not intend to join it ever either. He also said that if need arises, they shall even issue statements rejecting these false allegations. Anyone aware of the ground realities in Pakistan would know that such a public denial of am unsubstantiated rumour might endanger their lives and by calling them out without any substantial basis is both insensitive and irresponsible!

On what basis has Mr. Rumi made this allegation? Did he seek the clarification from those Shias whom he claims are part of DPC? And what is the point of making these allegations?

The Shia Muslims of Pakistan are already at the receiving end of the ISI-backed Jihadists who want to commit their genocide along with that of other targeted groups like Ahmadis, Sunni Barelvis, Christian and Hindus.

If that is not enough, do they have to suffer further from the dishonest discourse of Pakistan’s Jejune liberals who are either unmoved to write about their genocide, or worse, misrepresent it?

The above observation must not be misconstrued to mean that we are  not aware of the fact that a few Iran-financed, ISI-influenced Shia mullahs do not exist. Of course the existence of such fringe element within Shia community must be highlighted and challenged, as has been done in recent posts by LUBP and Pakistan Blogzine. For example:

This is unlike Raza Rumi and some other “liberals” who resort to generalizing allegations against Pakistan’s Shia community, and distort fact (e.g. alleged participation of Shia leaders in DPC). Moreover, some of them are seen to misrepresent Shia genocide in Quetta as ‘ethnic violence’ while misrepresenting Shia genocide in other areas of Pakistan as ‘sectarian violence’. https://lubpak.net/archives/74987

On a not very unrelated note, while Shias as well as other communities of Pakistan are increasingly concerned about the lack of attention by Pakistan’s civil society and human rights groups to the silent Shia genocide taking place in various areas and provinces of Pakistan, this is how Raza Rumi rationalized the silence of human rights groups:

With respect, we request Raza Rumi and other “liberals” to carefully review their role in maintaining and contributing to the silence or misrepresentations on State-sponsored Shia genocide in Pakistan. Instead of reminding and encouraging human rights groups to break their silence on Shia genocide, they are in fact encouraging them to do what they are already doing, i.e., remaining silent! https://lubpak.net/archives/58864

Sadly we note that Raza Rumi and some other liberals have in the past misrepresented Shia genocide in Pakistan as ‘sectarian violence’ and also published false and obfuscating information on this topic. https://lubpak.net/archives/74987

All we can say is that when future historians will write on Shia genocide in Pakistan, certain names in Pakistani media and blogs will always be remembered for the respective role they played in enabling or confronting the genocide. Choice resides with Raza Rumi and others who claim to be a champion of liberal values and human rights. How would they like to be remembered?

  • I can perfectly understand if some liberals don’t want to write on Shia genocide, particularly after what ISI did to Saleem Shehzad. But being silent is something else, active misrepresentation is a different thing. Raza Rumi, who I respect very much, seems to have crossed that line. Wonder why?

  • Raza Rumi has been misled into anti-Shia discourse by ISI-affiliates such as Saleem Javed Hazara, a supporter of Abdul Khaliq Hazara (an ISI-tout).

I feel pity for the otherwise sane man.

  • Yet another attacking and abusive piece. Shame on LUBP.

Do you know that Pak Tea House and The Friday Times are most vocal against sectarian violence in Pakistan. Much before LUBP and other viruses were born!

Don’t misrepresent sectarian violence as Shia genocide.

    • why on earth you want to fool the people? everybody knows who is killing whom and for what. this is nothing but Shia Genocide and it can never be translated into sectarian clash. Even the killers don’t call it sectarian war, they admit they are busy in genocide of shias.

  • Shame on you LUBP douchebags! Raza Rumi is true liberal who will never tolerate this rubbish and different viewpoint of yours. True Liberals will never answer the arguements; they will make indirect remarks and then end the arguement with Urdu or Persian Couplets!

  • “He also said that if need arises, they shall even issue statements rejecting these false allegations.”

If this isn’t the time to issue such a statement then when?

  • Instead of apologizing to Shias, Raza Rumi is circulating an official press release of Difa-e-Pakistan Council drafted by the ISI to prove that Shia scholars are a part of the DPC.

Whose agenda is Raza Rumi serving?

Clearly he is not on the side of Pakistan’s most target killed faith group, Shias.

  • These Ali Salmans, Sarah Khans, M Balochs etc want us to believe their Iranian discourse on Shia genocide?

Both Sunnis and Shias are responsible for sectarian violence in Pakistan.

    @Ali Salman

Should we trust you or Najam Sethi, Raza Rumi and other brave individuals who actually live in Pakistan and describe this as sectarian violence?

  • I am glad that Raza Rumi exposed the hypocrisy of fake activist.

There is only one genuine activist highlighting sectarian violence in Pakistan. His name is Raza Rumi.

For Raza Rumi, this is an opportunity to attack Shia activists and Iranian clergy. The Real activists Raza Rumi of Najam Sethi Club and Saleem Javed of Khushamid Club are silent on Shia genocide in Gilgit and Chilas:

Sad to see Raza Rumi describing Le Us Build Pakistan as #letusbark. Previously he misrepresented #ShiGenocide, now personal attacks? Why is Raza Rumi using indecent language against LUBP and its editors? Our only crime is this: http://t.co/GHzV3KFO

  • By writing an attacking and abusive piece against Raza Rumi, this blog has not only insulted Imam Raza but also Maulana Rumi.

The blasphemers will rot in hell.

  • 2 things are important!
    1) The link Mr Rumi has provided show the names of Shia cleriks. This has to be clarified. Is the link authentic?
2)The concern Shia cleriks need to issue a prese release bcz than DPC is using their name without their consent. If they dont clarify this officially and DPC press release is authentic than it will only mean that they are part of it.

  • Here’s a link to the most authentic information on what constitutes DPC, from the horse’s mouth, from DPC’s official website:

    27. Hindu Community Khi (Ramesh Laal)

    32. ASWJ (Ahmed Ludhianvi)
    34.Mutahida Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith (Naeem Badshah)
35.Majlis Ahraar e Islam (syed Kafil Shah bukhari)
36.Jamiat Ashat Tauheed sunnah (Maulana Tayyab tahiri)

Clearly, there is no mention of any Shia scholar including those claimed to be a part of DPC by Raza Rumi.

Yes, DPC (in fact ISI) tried to lure some Shia scholars into DPC. Shia scholars were invited to an informal meeting with Sami-ul-Haq in Lahore but as soon as they came to know that ASWJ (Sipah-e-Sahaba) too was to be a part of the the DPC conglomerate, they flatly refused to be a part of it.

On no occasion, any Shia leaders participated in any press conference or rally of the DPC.

The very fact that Raza Rumi is circulating an ISI-manufactured press release (which was published by not a single Pakistani newspaper) to prove that Shias are a part of DPC demonstrates his bias.

By the way, what’s the exact source of the obscure press release tweeted by Raza Rumi? Where was it published? Where is it available?

Then this must not be seen in isolation from Raza Rumi’s general discourse on Shia genocide, i.e, Sunni-Shia sectarian violence. It is the same dishonest discourse which he has been consistently peddling (in addition to being silent on Shia genocide) in Pak Tea House, The Friday Times etc.

  • Thanks Batool!
I also see in one of the articles on LUBP a statement by same shia clerics supporting Nizam e Adal and Sufi Muhammed.
Its now irrelavant fact if they are part of DPC or not. if they can support Sufi muhammed for me they are supporters of DPC .

  • That some Shia Mullahs are sitting in ISI’s lap is an established truth.

That some “liberals” are recycling ISI’s discourse on Shia genocide is an equally important truth.

  • Raza Rumi said: “What are some Shia leaders doing on stage with their murderers u/r the banner of Pak Defence Council?”

What stage? What picture? What banner?

    Proof = zilch

No wonder Rumi sahib is resorting to abusive comments by alleging that the author of the present post is a sub-human, a virus, a BOT.

  • Sabah Hasan, a cabinet member of MWM, made the following statement:

“What Mr. Rumi says hardly matters to me as a Shia. However, for the record, yes both Hafiz Riaz Hussain Najafi and Qazi Niaz Hussain Naqvi were invited, but they refused to attend any meeting or to join DPC. Same with Majlis-e Wahdat-e Muslimeen and the religious scholars associated with it. Allama Sajid Naqvi, head of Tehrik-e Jafria Pakistan, however, did attend a preliminary meeting, but dissociated himself from DPC shortly thereafter.”

  • I don’t know who has taken over control of LUBP recently, but it’s strange that for a while now it has started to attack the very people who it should be supporting for the commonality of their causes. What’s wrong LUBP? Must you try to bring down people like Raza Rumi, the theme of whose writings is always pro-secular and anti-extremism? Your editorial policy seems to be so unfair and counter-productive. If you want your talk against these atrocities to have any effect, then get your villains right, for what you seem to be doing now is like making enemies out of allies. It’s easy to criticize when you hide behind fake identities. Who are you guys?

  • Some shia hater here wrote about the problem being sectarian violence. I would like to repeat the question posted by Ali Salman.
Also perhaps you could give us some names of deobandi professionas target killed by the very violent rafidhi shia community, also maybe you could tell us about the scores of buses full of innocent taliban (deobandi) Muslims killed by shias..

  • I dont know why people close their eyes… @ mirza ali you have raised a right question above… We should accept the fact that the extremists are trying to push this into a secterian conflicts which currently is not…. Currently it is a simple case of genocide like Bosnia, where you are killed by identifying that you belong to certain sect…

I hope the plans of the enemy wont get thru and hopefully this would not turn into a sectarian conflict… !!

  • I do not know who this gentleman Raza Roomi is. From the above article I got to know he is a writer. Well, I will read some of his script to know if he is a true journalist or one of the “journalists on sale” (journalism has become the most profitable industry on the soil of Pakistan), there are some strong stake holders that govern this industry.

I fail to understand why is this hatred against our shiite brothers. What insanity is being spread in Pakistan? Hate against USA is understandable to me, but I have no clue why suddenly shiite brothers killing has spread like great forest fire? I simply do not understand it. While I am writing this comment three persons were killed in Orangi Town. From a TV channel news, looks like this is also part and parcel of Shiites killing game being played in evey corners of Pakistan. Where are we heading to? To my knowledge, there was only one jamaat, Lashkar Jhangvi, who were doing this heinous killing, but I was wrong, there are many. Who are funding them? I am totally blank. “If we can’t kill Americans, if we can’t kill Indians, we can kill our own brothers”, this does not fit in my mind. Killing like this scale must have some reasons, some logics, I am simply at a loss. Are we heading towards destruction through this sectarian killings?

    Allah! Save Pakistan.
