What does calling another Muslim a non-Muslim make you? – by Zeeba Hashmi

One word that comes to your mind with intrigue. Qadiyani, doesn’t come easy for its existential uncertainty in Pakistan. Yet, despite what the constitution says about them in derogatory terms, they are determined to stay in this country that has dogmatic laws made to appease the Saudi-funded and military promoted religious might.

Irrespective of the fact that despite having the demeaning laws, the final determinism of persecution is based on mob vigilantism that makes the work of law enforcing authorities quite ineffectual, hence leaving our minorities completely vulnerable.

But there’s nothing like sheer determinism of survival in Pakistan, a country which is literally succumbing to the heralding dogs in green turbans and long beards or the chatterbox Aalim scholars who come on TV in their best designer Kurtas to publically denounce others as Wajib ul Qatl for following their beliefs. Even more shameful is it that citizenss of Pakistan can’t have their ID Cards unless the sign the statement calling Ahmedis as non-Muslims.

Imagine the social humiliation a Qadiyani actually goes through every time he/she sees everyone signing the piece of paper condemning them in order to be a citizen of Pakistan? As if our righteous Muslims did not scream “discimination” whenever they were to que up for special registration at American Airports.

While the mind remains boggled with religious onslaught and the vigilante mob tyranny, it gets even harder to understand what drove our society to ex-communication of an entire segment, calling them kaafirs and relegating them with status of a minority.

“We don’t like to be called a minority” Says Tabinda*, a defiant young Ahmedi woman and a scholar with whom I made my initial contact for my research on minorities. “the state has endorsed us with this title, and as a protest, we refrain from voting in general elections”

Imagine that: an entire segment is not casting their votes and still no one feels bothered by their dismay with the government that calls itself “democratic”? The roots of evil lie in the 1973 constitution by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto which officially called them Non-Muslims.

Zia ul Haq then came with his double fanged poison, passing an ordinance in 1984 that actually persecuted them for praying in public along with other “muslims”, were forbidden to give azaans, and were even forbidden to build “minarets” (pillars) of the mosque. Stating that any act of Islam practiced by them is “Un-Islamic”, hence Islam is forbidden for them .

Confusion doesn’t even end there with the ridiculous laws that have been over-enthusiastically presented and passed by the president, it keeps on living and thriving without expiry or introspection as it thrashes to indirectly exterminate a 0.25 percent of the population. Pressured by the Tehreek e Khatm e Naubuwat movement that started with their calls to denounce Ahmediyya on a social level, eventually boasted about the Government bowing down before their demands. Their mission worked in socially outcasting them. Often times have I heard about people using Dettol and chemical cleansers everytime they learned that an Ahmediyya person has paid homage them a homage by accident or by fate.

Where is this hatred really stemming from? So much so that an important international Pakistani physicist, the Nobel Winner Dr. Abdus Sallam has been deprived of national recognition and pride because of his Ahmedia connection? They did not even spare the respect of his gravestone.

Instead, the schools in Punjab mainly mount portraits Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan, the known plagiarist and a convicted thief who’s being presented as a role model.

To understand the degree of hatred here is not surprising for anyone trying to understand bigotry, but once one finally comes to know the basis of this hate is most shocking. The Ahmediyas are not technically Kaafirs.

They believe in the finality of the Prophet Muhammed. They take Ghulam Ahmed Mirza as a reverened reformer, just like mainstream Muslims here have faith in our Sufi Saints. They don’t even have a seperate Kalima, I witnessed that at a Friday sermon I attended at their “Ibadat Gah” which I would like to call a Masjid that it rightly deserves.

The only technical difference they have with other major sects of Muslims is over the Resurrection of Christ. So where are they really committing the “Shirk” as propagandized by the Khatm e Nabuwat proponents? And declaring anyone who believes in Allah and his Last Prophet, to be a Kafir is a form of Shirk itself.

This makes an entire Government of Pakistan living in an act of sin, something that needs to be challenged at the court and in the parliament, only if there are any conscientious takers.

  • Ahemdies are not muslim, the only cult whose founder have abused other msulims as wine and their woen as bitches, Ref. Book Najmulhudda. claiming an ownership of any identity, family, religion, state, there are certain basicas, all of a sudden some baloch can not stand and say that I am Jat. same is with ethnicity , religion and others. Being muslim , u hv to accept and announce thaor must Muhammad PBUH is the last prophet where as Mirza Ghulam Ahmed claimed to hv separate identity for his followers.
Read the abuses he used for all prophets, muslims and hindu women. before commenting read all this

wrong, they were debated for 18 days in the parliament. they challanged the articles in courts and finaly in supre court .
you have written this article without going into details

  • What a shit of paper you written without any research . Kafir is kafir no one Even think about to say muslim except stupid like you . Go and do some research then write some thing good that makes sense.

  • Thats what hapened whensome one writes without doing research. you are caliming that qadianess belive in finality of prophethood.almost 100% qadianiees ahev not read books of Mirza Ghulam ahmed, ask them to read his boosk like aik ghalti ka aizala, anjame attham, khutbaelhamia, tadkira, arbaeen. he isnulted all propehts , he claimed that quran Khuda ki kitan aur merra maun ki batein. he even calimed to be God. he was a mad man. who so ever qadiani talk 2 u , ask him or her to read his books. This is the only cult who takes 10% of your wealth to get burried in heaven. vow and mirza family is exempted

  • Atiq Sahib and Faisal Sahib, please do not accuse Ahmadis without providing proof. And with your language you have shown what kind of filth you people are reading. All the accusations by Atiq Sahib are false and taking words of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad out of context.

  • Kindly have a look at his piece

You can search google for the books in pdf for verifying the references provided in the above link.

Besides, whether Qadiyanis are muslim or non-muslim, in my opinion, they are human and should be treated the same way a muslim treats Christian, Hindus or other non-muslim, i.e. as a human. Kindly reduce hate and promote peace. We have enough hate in Pakistan.

  • Bigotry in Pakistani society is very deep rooted. The most contemptuous and hateful language that the two extremist morons above have expressed shows their mentality is no different than the white pro-slavery mentality prevalent in deep south US or in South Africa. The only difference being one used racial difference as cover for their bigotry and the two morons above are using religion to pretend their bigotry has any justification.

Bigotry has no justification whatsoever and there is no place for this sort of hate in a respected society and neither would the above two bigots be considered humans in such society. Ironically the two morons presumably consider themselves educated just because they have some sort of certificate from an educational institution but they are animals disguised as humans and their crude mind set immediately gives them away as soon as they speak on the subject.

Spirit of Zia ul Haq lives on.

  • New Statesman: Extreme injustice — a legal mandate for bigotry
    http://www.newstatesman.com/asia/2011/08/pakistan-christian-minorities

“Pakistan was conceived as a secular state with Islam as its main religion. “We have many non-Muslims — Hindus, Christians, and Parsis — but they are all Pakistanis,” said the country’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah in a celebrated speech. However, in the late 1970s and 1980s, the military dictator General Zia-ul-Huq engaged in a repressive programme of ‘Islamisation’. Among his actions was the introduction of a set of blasphemy laws, under which a person can face indefinite imprisonment or even the death penalty for criticising the Prophet Muhammad or the Qur’an.”

All religious bigots must read the above article to broaden their mindset, if it is at all possible. Alternatively see the movie Mississippi Burning to see how bigotry is used to justify extremism, persecution and even murder. No different from what is going on in Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

  • I do not agree with author because she seems to have been lured into their(Qadyani/Ahmedi/Mirzayyi) trap. They convince you that they consider him their spiritual leader; But in reality they ignorant fools who do not know that he has declared himself to be the ‘last prophet’,the very one mentioned in Quran. That’s why they do not object to reading Quran and pray like we do give azaan, etc.

  • I appreciate your initiative.People have misunderstandings about Ahmadiyya.Keep in your mind that there are two groups of Ahmadiyya. One group Lahori Ahmadis believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was not a prophet and was a reformer. They believe that Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) was the last prophet and no prophet will come after.Mirza Ghaulam Ahmad never claimed prophet hood.Mirza Ghulam Ahmad never claimed that the one who do not believe in him will be doomed to hell.
So we should use reason and rationality in discussion when talking about religion. Technically speaking the one recites kalima shada and believes in all basic pillars of Islam etc Kalima Shada, prayer, zakat, fasting and Hajj is a Muslim. We should try to bring people in Islam and not to throw them out of Islam.
We should be patient and investigate properly into the matters relating.

  • Let not condemn the author. She has done her duty in a very professional manner.Lets see what Quran tell us about such approach. In Quran the benefit of doubt is given to the one who says Assalamu Alaikum that we should consider him a Momin.According to Sunni School of thought and Muslim Jurists if a person has ninety nine reasons to be a Kafir but has one reason be called a muslim then he should be considered a Muslim. Our prophet Hazrat Muhammad(PBUH) has strictly said that we should not look into the hearts of people to check their faith. IF some calls himself a Muslim and believes in the basics of Islam then we should consider him a muslim. In Pakistan the Ahmaiddiya matter is more a political than religious. Let not indulge politics with religion and see that our main aim should be to strengthen our link to God and not to call others Kafir.
