The PPP and Pakistan’s foreign policy with Iran

The 2008-13 PPP government of Yusuf Raza Gillani/Zardari/Raja Pervaiz signed the Iran-Pakistan Gas pipeline. This was immediately overturned by “anti establishment” Nawaz Sharif.

The same PPP government made historic accords with Afghanistan and Iran to reduce tension and conflict. This was also scuttled by “competent” “gud governance” Nawaz Sharif who did not even have a foreign policy.

PPP under the Bhuttos and now Zardaris always have a coherent foreign policy where they used regional cooperation to gradually push back against US imperialism. They used soft diplomacy and the economy.

These are not tools understood or appreciated by Saudi-Washington DC stooges like Nawaz Sharif.

The PPP government had to bear the brunt for taking a stand. Saudi Arabia refused to meet them or cooperate with them because of Wahhabi prejudice against the Sufi Sunni faith of Zardari and Gillani.

In the Quetta massacres of Shia Hazaras that took place 7 years ago, PPP was singled out for blame while Taliban apologists like Imran Khan were welcomed. Nawaz Sharif, who was facilitating Lashkar e Jhangvi, got a free pass as always.

At that time, Zia-ist elements in the security establishment were protecting Takfiri Deobandi terrorist groups in Baluchistan.

Instead of protesting against them, the protestors turned against the PPP; who stepped down from the provincial government as per demands.

The Massacres of Shia Hazaras continued for years after PPP was removed and was only controlled when later COAS’s General Raheel and General Bajwa took action against Takfiri elements. During the PPP government, then COAS General Kiyani refused to go after Takfiri terrorists.

We cannot ignore context or history. Unfortunately, MWM has worked with Pakistan’s security establishment to undercut PPP and the Shia vote. This has been a counter productive practice and should be relayed to Iran.
