Asma Jehangir Exposes Mir Shakeel Jang Group by amanasif737

According to Yousuf Nazar: The current circus on electronic media should not be confused with media freedom. Jang group’s role has been as disruptive as that of ISI. In 2007, I held the view CJP’s issue was not about independent judiciary. Similarly, the current GEO-ISI battle is not about media freedom.

yn

According to Abdul Nishapuri: Ansar Abbasi, Professor Ibrahim (JI) and ASWJ pages are criticizing ISI because they are more loyal to Deobandi ideology than agencies. In contrast, Najam Sethi, Nasim Zehra, Sherry Rehman, Mubasher Lucman, Zaid Hamid, Imran Khan and some PPP, and PMLN leaders are more loyal to agencies than any ideology.
Neither of both groups (pro-Deobandi and pro-agencies) has anything to do with integrity or human rights.

Update: Comparing reaction by Sherry Rehman and Asma Jahangir to the ISI vs Geo saga

Difference between Asma Jahangir and Sherry Rehman is that the former criticizes both ISI and Geo while the latter only Geo. Sherry Rehman can and will never be comparable to Asma Jahangir. Fomer serves the establishment, latter exposes its crimes. Apologies to the elitist human rights and liberal cartel and its wannabe middle class flatterers who continue to promote Sherry Rehman:

“It seems from the conversation as if Mir caused Khalid Khwaja’s death by instigating the alleged Punjabi Taliban. The insistence on KK’s links with Ahmedis and Americans could do the trick of inciting the Taliban against KK. But I am sure that was not Hamid Mir’s intent. He was just trying to show-ff to the Taliban the superiority of his information. Such show-off comes with the territory that he operates in. But the conversation was then conveniently leaked so that it may appear as something in which the intelligence agencies had no involvement thats is in the killing of KK.” http://ayeshasiddiqa.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/did-hamid-mir-have-conversation-with.html

In the first instance, should we not be asking why the attack on Hamid Mir is more condemnable than the many more attacks and everyday injustices faced by ordinary people who do not enjoy celebrity status here?

Shahram Azhar Well, every attack on every innocent is condemnable. As a rule, we are opposed to violence (except in self defense).

However, We got to know about this particular incident because of two reasons:

    1) HM is a lot more influential in terms of the fact that he is an opinion maker. He had started receiving threats after his program on Mama Qadeer: it’s a must watch if you haven’t seen it already.

    2) Hm is backed by a major media group.

The point that most people (including some leftists) don’t understand is that freedom of speech, a relatively independent judiciary and a representative parliament are beneficial for people who want to do workers and peasants organizational struggle in Pakistan. Why? Because we know that we can engage in legal forms of struggle. Without these rights even our basic organizational rights are taken away.

Fatimah Ihsan Shahram: comrade don’t forget where Hamid mir is coming from, let’s not forget his past and his ties with the establishment – i see the current scenario as nothing more than a disullisioned/disenchanted ’employee’ complaining against his bosses…having said this I think we can use this opportunity to say what we feel about the intelligence agencies and the fauj.. but in our way and style, let’s not make those heroes who are not. Also, his recent ‘support’ for mama qadeer has to be taken with a grain of salt. I was part of the march etc and though hamid mir has been vocal about the Baloch issue, it is his way of getting back to the establishment and he has done nothing but used this narrative to his own benefit. I, for one, am not going to fall for this at all, except how we can use this opportunity to expose the establishment. No need to make heroes out of those who have had a past that they must be accountable for!

Shahram Azhar Fatimah Ihsan, I don’t think in terms of heroes/villains. At least not any more. As far as I am concerned this is a power struggle and in that power struggle the Army and the ISI are the criminals and Hamid Mir is the victim. I don’t think that the ISI attacked Hamid Mir because of his “right-wing” political orientation but rather because of his upright stand on Balochistan. History, and concrete circumstances propel ordinary (and even right-wing people) into situations where they take anti status-quo positions. So it is history and not the whims of a left-leaning Pakistani (like me) that makes “heroes”. There is something fundamentally wrong with the logic of our political economy and that is the fact that the army and the ISI dominate it from above. We live in a praetorian state that we have inherited from colonialism.

It is this precise material circumstance that pushes the army to end up attacking even its former allies. A very good example is the PMLN which, at least historically, had very cozy relations with the Army. The narrow economic and political interests of the army propelled these two political groups (PMLN vs Army) into an antagonistic course.

Anyways, returning to Hamid Mir: individuals matter only in so far as they personify social relations. Which group in society does HM represent? The group (a bourgeois group admittedly) that sells ‘information and news’, a.k.a “media”. The point is that I think that despite all of its negativity (I have referred to the Pakistani media as having 66 Fox News on previous occasions) the net result of the “free bourgeois media” in Pakistan has been a rise in the political consciousness of our people.
It is this rise in the political consciousness which I absolutely admire and want to hold on to. But obviously, the army (which rules through secrecy and violence) does not want “information” to be publicized.

The question then is: Where do we stand with respect to this struggle (The struggle over information)?

I stand with Hamid Mir (who is in the present political situation a personification of the right to public information)

Fatimah Ihsan I stand with my own intuition and with the understanding that side-effects are not the real panacea for anything

Shahram Azhar Comrade if our support for groups/individuals is only contingent upon complete agreement with their views then we can only participate in “communist” circles. Don’t you think that we will have to broaden our spectrum if we must break into mainstream mass political circles?

Shahram Azhar Fahad Rizwan the recording that you have posted above means absolutely nothing. why?

A journalist has to throw a lot of red herrings to get information on the subject that he wants information about. An investigative journalist is someone who has practiced that art for many many years and learns to “play the insider” with the subject. He has to “go native” and make him feel that he is one of their own.

This is what hamid mir is doing in that call that has been recorded by the ISI.

Syed Riaz Al-Malik Hajjaji In the power struggle btw pro Taliban Hamid Mir (Taliban are still being backed by ISI) I am so happy that COMRADE Hamid Mir is being backed by many LEFT and LIBERAL. reminds me how same people made a Hero out of Abu Arsalan in 2007 and we all know how that turned out. When Hazrat Imran Khan, Hamid Mir, Ansar Abbasi, Abu Arsalan start showing new found concern for the Baloch cause, we Ghairatmands know how easy it is to appropriate a cause to not only fool Surkha Liberals but to use same cause for our true motives. for his decade long “concern” for the “Missing Persons Case, Abu Arsalan only did teeny token bit for the few Al Qaeeda suspects like Janjua of army but nothing substantial for the 8000 plus Baloch. Hamid Mir and other Bunjabi Ghairatmands are only using Baolch cause to Re-Brand the Taliban as a “Nationalist Movement” whose “Human rights” are violated whenever State does even token retaliation against its ISI backed Strategic Assets Fatimah Ihsan

Shahram Azhar Syed Riaz Al-Malik Hajjaji I think in your mind everything needs to be categorized in one of two boxes, one labelled pro-Taliban the other labelled “Anti-Taliban”. There are no pro-democracy, pro-dictatorship, pro-nationalist minorities or pro-freedom of conscience boxes. I wish there were and maybe we could gather some of the political economic information out there into THOSE boxes.

This is not about the “individual” called Hamid Mir. It is about a very particular, human right: That is, the right to public information. No one agrees with anyone in totality; if that becomes the basis of allowing freedom of speech to people then NO one will have freedom of speech.

Syed Riaz Al-Malik Hajjaji Whenever I see Hamid Mir’s gushing treatment of ASWJ-LeJ chief, Maulana Ludhianvi, I tick off the pro-freedom of conscience box. when I see Hamid Mir appropriating Baloch cause for his talks with the Taliban stance, I tick off the pro-nationalist box. when I hear Hamid Mir on Ahmadis and Shias, I tick off the minorities box. and when I see Hamid Mir’s “anti establishment” stance on Memogate, Raymond Davis, Kerry Lugar Bill, Memogate, bashing Gillani on attempting to take ISI under civilian control etc etc etc I see his “commitment” to pro-democracy box and tick that off to, Jazakallah. And when I see his passionate crusade to defend Dr. Arsalan Ibne Hazrat Ifikhar Chaudhary, I can finally understand why this Marxist Millionaire Maverick Hamid Mir ticks off all the boxes. One Taliban wing is attacking Hamid Mir and another Taliban wing is bashing its ISI Protectors. Some may call this a farce but Hajjaji is loving it!

Declan Walsh notes in his piece in the New York Times that the current ISI-Geo saga may also be seen in the context of Geo’s professional rivalry with a new TV channel Bol TV.

    Walsh writes:

Tensions have been bubbling for some time between the Jang Group, the country’s largest media conglomerate, and the ISI. Jang is owned by Mir Shakil ur-Rehman, a reclusive editor who lives with his two wives in Dubai, where he keeps a tight grip on a media empire that includes Geo News, several sports and entertainment channels, and a stable of newspapers in Urdu and English.

Last fall, Mr. Rehman came to believe that the ISI was sponsoring a new television station, Bol, to dilute his commercial and political clout. His newspapers ran hostile reports about Bol, prompting competing media organizations to hit back with stories that painted Geo as sympathetic to Pakistan’s old rival, India.

Senior figures at Geo claimed the spat had put their lives in danger. In November, Mr. Rehman’s son Ibrahim, who is chief executive of Geo, said he had received warnings of an attack by “the ISI or one of their proxies.” Mr. Mir claimed the ISI tried to lure him away from the station, and had threatened his life.

The tensions erupted publicly after last weekend’s attack on Mr. Mir. His brother, Amir Mir, who is also a journalist, accused the ISI of orchestrating the shooting in an emotional denunciation that was broadcast for hours on Geo, often against a backdrop of a photo of the ISI director general, Gen. Zaheer ul-Islam.

The ISI leadership, stung by the unusually open challenge, reacted angrily. On Tuesday, the military leadership sought to have Geo shut down and its editors prosecuted for “a libelous and scandalous” campaign that it said violated the country’s media law. On Thursday, television viewers in major cities found that Geo had disappeared from its usual position on their cable television sets. And on Friday, posters appeared across central Islamabad that praised the ISI and carried glossy photos of the spy chief, General Islam, a first in a country where many citizens fear to say the letters ISI out loud.

Mr. Rehman of the Jang group has a rancorous relationship with Sultan Lakhani, who owns the smaller Express media group, which includes a television station and several newspapers. (One of those papers, the English-language Express Tribune, prints The International New York Times in Pakistan.) A third station, ARY, is owned by a family of gold dealers that has little love for Mr. Rehman.

“The control of the owners and their say in what happens has increased tremendously,” said one editor, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “No editor or journalist can take a stand against them.”

  • In his column in the New York Times, Declan Walsh notes that Jang / Geo has been in the past attacked by the banned Deobandi terrorist outfits (TTP and LeJ-ASWJ).

    https://lubp.net/archives/312015

    Walsh notes:

Even staunch ISI critics thought the station’s personalized attacks, which singled out the ISI spy chief as the culprit, were hasty and premature, especially at a time when Islamist militants were also targeting reporters.

In 2012, the militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi recruited a junior reporter at Geo to help plan the assassination of a news editor and a prominent talk show host at the station, said a former Geo manager with direct knowledge of the case. The plot was foiled when the reporter confessed.

A second Geo employee was identified as a militant after the Taliban assault on Karachi’s Mehran naval base in June 2011, the former manager said. The station also believes that insider information played a role in the death of Wali Khan Babar, a Geo reporter who was killed by the M.Q.M. in 2010, a current Geo manager said.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/27/world/asia/attack-on-journalist-starts-battle-in-pakistani-press.html?_r=0

This revelation should also be seen in light of the fact the Punjabi Taliban’s admission on Twitter that they are the ones who attacked Hamid Mir in April 2014. In November 2012, a simialr attack (warning bomb) was claimed by the Taliban.

However, this aspect of the TTP-ASWJ’s role in the attack on Hamid Mir was completely wiped out, not only by the mangaement of Geo TV/Jang Group but also by analysts such as Najam Sethi, Nasim Zehra, Ejaz Haider etc.

In the meanwhile, Jihadist Salafi and Deobandi groups, known for close links with the ISI have openly issued public statements and taken out public rallies to express solidarity with the ISI and army while maligning Hamid Mir and Geo TV. This aspect was also highlighted by Hamid Mir who in his exclusive intervew to BBC Urdu said that:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/urdu/multimedia/2014/04/140426_hamid_mir_interview_zs.shtml

For example, on Twitter, ISI-backed Salafi-Wahhabi terrorist group JuD (LeT) is openly expressing support for the ISI and Army while criticizing Geo/Mir.

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25

Our movement for Pakistan ‘s stability and to help bring all its institutions on the same page, shall continue with full force Insha’Allah

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
The government should break its silence and curb ministers issuing statements against the army, this is a matter of national stability.

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
India wishes to plant seeds of discord. Success lies in unity of people, armed forces & all national institutions,

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
We need to bridge the gap created between our public and armed forces, unite them under the ideology of La Ilaha Ilallah

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Our assets should be protected, Our enemies wish to target our nuclear installations and they are desperate to strip us of this strength.

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
India is being given free hand to destabilize Pakistan, We can never let that happen. Unity is the greatest need for Pakistan today

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
U.S. is leaving the region, defeated and wishes to create turmoil in the region before leaving. Government must understand the conspiracies

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
To issue degrading statements against armed forces is violation of constitution & PM is under an oath to protect & uphold constitution.

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Government must understand the background of this sensitive issue & realize the nature of the enemy’s agenda by clarifying facts & motives

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Forming Judicial commission is a positive step but the findings are obscured, real enemies are not exposed creating more room for propaganda

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Weakening Pakistani lines of defense, has always been India’s top agenda – Pakistan army is the vanguard of Islam & custodian of Ummah

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Its an enemy conspiracy to malign the armed forces, to generate a sense of detachment between the public and the army

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
Degrading the armed forces through venomous propaganda is not justified by any means in the name of freedom of speech

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
We note with sadness that consistent propaganda against armed forces was being broadcast undauntedly. while Govt watched silently.

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
No media or broadcasting entity should be allowed to air vile propaganda against our security institutions

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
How can the PM afford to remain silent when the dignity, pride & confidence of our armed forces is at stake, where does this leave Pakistan?

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 25
We ask the PM, why is there silence over this malicious propaganda against the military and defense institutions ?

    Hafiz Muhammad Saeed @HafizSaeedJUD • Apr 24
Propaganda against Pakistan’s Armed forces and defense institutions is Indian conspiracy that should be countered with national unity & act

  • Declan Walsh writes in NYT:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/27/world/asia/attack-on-journalist-starts-battle-in-pakistani-press.html?_r=0

Hamid Mir has an ambiguous history with the ISI. He shot to prominence after interviewing Osama bin Laden in 1998, and was initially seen as sympathetic to the pro-jihadi agenda of the Pakistani military and the ISI. But in recent years he has championed the cause of Baluch nationalists, angering the army, and highlighted human rights abuses during military operations.

“A lot of us liberals feel a dilemma,” said Abbas Nasir, a former editor at the BBC and Dawn newspaper. “We’re disgusted with the way Geo has behaved in recent years. But we also know the consequences of letting the boots shut down the media. And that’s got to be the bottom line.”

    ————

    Viewpoint’s interview with Saleem Asmi:

Viewpoint: Hamid Mir himself has been popularizing discourses and narratives being used against him for a while, but particularly after the assassination attempt. He used to declare everybody he disagreed as traitor [Mir Jaffar, Mir Saqid was his preferred term], a ‘liberal fascist’, a ‘sell out’ etc. He has been an essential part of the Team Media Taliban, popularizing pro-Taliban, Indiaphobic, and Jihadist ideas [an implicit endorsement of ISI agenda]. Don’t you think one should really feel sorry for Goebels if they for some reason earn Nazi wrath?

Saleem Asmi: Yes, Hamid Mir himself has never been above controversy. He is known to have liaisons with some unseemly characters like Malik Ishaq of LeJ, which cannot perhaps be explained away on the ground of an exercise in investigative journalism. He has been described as India-phobic and Indian agent in the same breath. Some people insist vehemently that he is an ISI agent, and claim to have proofs to back their claim. But what can be said without fear of contradiction is that he has had close relations with Osama and other Al Qaida figures. He had interviewed Osama in Afghanistan and also translated his poetry into Urdu. All said and done one thing very positive about him has been his persistent and uncompromising reports of agencies’ atrocities against the Baloch youth, their continuing kidnappings etc. His unstinted support to the oppressed people of that unfortunate province alone should wash clean all his stigmas. (LUBP’s note: We, with respect, disagree with Mr Asmi on this point. For details, refer to LUBP’s post: Hamid Mir, a champion of Balochs?)

Viewpoint: There used to be an impression beyond media circles that Hamid Mir was hand in glove with the secret agencies. Don’t you think the assassination attempt on Hamid Mir, if it is indeed an ISI plot, is in fact a case of mafia-style action to punish the ‘traitor’?

Saleem Asmi: As I have stated above, it is true that Hamid Mir has often been accused of having close ties with the agencies; it is also true that ISI works as a mafia, but I can’t say if this was a case of eliminating someone for betrayal. I think it is more like silencing a nagging voice.

Pakistan media and bloggers either ignore or fail to explain why JuD is attacking Hamid Mir/Geo while ASWJ-LeJ is supporting him.

This also shows that many (not all) journalists and activists around are either incompetent or compromised.

Clue: This is a case of good Wahhabis/Salafis vs bad Deobandis.

Good Jihadists are those who remain loyal to the mother of all agencies. Bad jihadists are those who remain loyal to their takfiri ideology.
