Pakistan’s chief Taliban spokesman in mainstream media, Ansar Abbasi in his “Analysis” published simultaneously in The News and Jang on Monday, August 19, 2013 has suggested that the PML-N government should use the opportunity of suspending indefinitely the execution of convicted terrorists and negotiate with the Taliban a ceasefire! It was in newspapers a day earlier that the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stopped the implementation of execution of terrorists convicted by courts.
Ansar Abbasi has used his pen to confuse the readers like always. In the first part of his “analysis” he considers it as an opportunity for the PML-N to negotiate a ceasefire with the Taliban by not executing Aqeel alias Dr. Usman as well as other Taliban terrorists. Aqeel alias Dr. Usman was expected to be hanged later this month. According to Taliban spokesman, Ansar Abbasi, “The premier’s decision has also coincided with the recent TTP threat that it would wage a war against the PML-N government and its leaders if Aqeel alias Dr Usman was executed on August 23 as per the earlier announcement of the government. The prime minister has directed the Interior Ministry to hold everything regarding the execution of death sentences till the conclusion of the meeting between the prime minister and the head of the state.”
Ansar Abbasi’s brother in arms, Asmatullah Muaviya, a TTP leader has threatened to kill PML-N leaders in case Taliban terrorists are executed.
After pleading the case for his parent organization, Ansar Abbasi has used his social-religio-politico skills to remind all that halting executions is not only un-Islamic and unconstitutional but also encourages terrorists and target killers to freely kill innocent peple without having a fear of being caught and killed.
Great stuff Ansar Abbasi. Keep the readers confused about what you want! Negotiating with the Taliban is never a good idea. be it the good Taliban or the bad Taliban. Anyone who kills people and challenges the writ of the state is to be killed and executed. While the PPP government failed in executing terrorists because of legal lacunae and usual stays and appeals, the PML-N is all powerful and can do whatever it feels like. It is squarely now upon them to protect the state and execute these hardened criminals without fear of retribution.
It may be noted that not executing these criminals gives them to time to recoup and plan their activities. Remember Adnan Rasheed was freed in a prison break of Bannu? If you do not execute these terrorists, they will be freed by their friends and then cause havoc to the nation. Kill them immediately else they will come for you.
Govt can use executions to get a ceasefire from TTP
Ansar Abbasi, The News, August 19, 2013
ISLAMABAD: The PML-N government has the opportunity to get an immediate ceasefire from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) stopping its operations throughout Pakistan in return for halting the execution of high profile convicts like Aqeel alias Dr Usman.
Such a move would also help set the stage for a result-oriented dialogue between the government and the TTP to achieve the much-awaited and direly needed goal of bringing peace to the terrorism-stricken people of Pakistan.
The prime minister has temporarily suspended the carrying out of the death penalty in the country following President Zardari’s letter to Nawaz Sharif that the former wanted to meet the latter to discuss the issue of long-pending death sentences to thousands of convicted prisoners.
The premier’s decision has also coincided with the recent TTP threat that it would wage a war against the PML-N government and its leaders if Aqeel alias Dr Usman was executed on August 23 as per the earlier announcement of the government.
The prime minister has directed the Interior Ministry to hold everything regarding the execution of death sentences till the conclusion of the meeting between the prime minister and the head of the state.
Last month, the PML-N government decided to overturn a five-year moratorium on the death penalty and execute those hardened terrorists who had been handed down death sentences. Following the government’s decision, the first few executions of convicted prisoners including that of Aqeel alias Dr Usman, who was involved in the GHQ attack, were scheduled in the third week of this month.
As soon as the government made these announcements, TTP leader and the Ameer of the Punjabi Taliban Asmatullah Muavia, warned that the executions would compel them to wage a war against the PML-N government. Another threatening statement released by a TTP spokesman warned that a highly-trained squad of suicide bombers had been constituted and if Aqeel was hanged in Faisalabad jail as per schedule on August 23, the Taliban would instantly target two key figures of the PML-N to avenge the deaths.
“Homes of prominent PML-N leaders will be attacked immediately if Aqeel is hanged. In such an eventuality, the leadership of the PML-N will be made target of revenge, just like we had targeted the ANP leadership,” the TTP spokesman warned. “Aqeel alias Dr Usman is our mujahid and we would never let our mujahid be hanged”, the TTP spokesman said.
Such a threat from the TTP could not be ignored. It instead contains the danger of furthering the terrorist activities besides vitiating the chances of resolving the issue of terrorism and extremism through dialogue process.
The TTP has panicked after the government announcement to hang the convicted criminals including Dr Usman. The government has the opportunity to ask for an immediate end of terrorist attacks all over Pakistan by the TTP as a pre-condition to enter into a dialogue.
In return, the government could halt the execution of TTP’s convicts like Dr Usman.
Otherwise, the halting of the death penalty would not only be an un-Islamic move but also a violation of the Constitution.
The non-execution of thousands of condemned prisoners during the last five years because of last government’s moratorium following pressure from western capitals, has also led to a rise in heinous crime in Pakistan.
While tens of thousands of innocent persons have been killed by target killers and terrorists during these years, there has been no execution of even one single target killer or terrorist during all these years.
Such a situation has also badly dented the element of deterrence in the society besides encouraging the criminal elements and hardened criminals to freely kill innocents without any fear of being caught and killed.
