Imran Khan announces protest campagian against rigging in elections

LAHORE (10 June 2013): Showing his distrust in the institutions of judiciary and Election Commission, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has threatened to launch a protest campaign after Eid if its reservations about the election results are not removed.

“We’ll take to the streets after Eid if poll rigging is not investigated in a transparent manner,” Imran Khan said at a press conference on Monday.

The PTI chief, who has yet to take oath as MNA, said he would raise the issue in his maiden speech in the National Assembly.

He said it was baffling that the PML-N, which had obtained only 6.8 million votes when it was at the peak of its popularity (in 1997), managed to secure 10.4 million votes in the May 11 elections.

Mr Khan, who had been a staunch supporter of the judiciary and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, said both the judiciary and the Election Commission had disappointed him. “The ‘umpires’ did not remain neutral and impartial in the electoral match.”

Admitting that his party lost the elections because it could not make an appropriate polling day plan, he said benefiting from the access to information law under the 18th Amendment, the PTI would obtain the count of ballot paper counterfoils to expose rigging.

Mr Khan claimed that a conspiracy had been hatched to assassinate him on the GT Road during an election rally.

Imran Khan said that the judiciary and the Election Commission direly disappointed the nation in the recent general elections. He demanded fair probe into rigging in the recent general elections and warned that his party would take to streets after Eid, if justice wasn’t done.

Imran added that the PTI would also go for repelling on seats where it felt rigging was done against it. He also said improper preparations by the party candidates for the polling day were also result of defeat in recent general elections.

Imran Khan said that he would take to streets if a transparent investigation into election riggings was prevented. It will be the country’s biggest protest, he said. He said that rigging during the recent general elections was unprecedented; the state machinery was supporting the PML-N. “We believed that since the judiciary was independent, a free and fair election will take place, but that was not the case,” he added. According to him, PTI does not want to derail democracy; its only demand was investigation into rigging so that in future such rigging does not take place during elections. This will also ease the minds of PTI supporters who were finding hard to digest the defeat after bagging a huge number of votes. If anyone tried to prevent their constitutional right, they will come out on streets.

To a question, he said Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had no role in his defeat in Lahore, it were the “umpires” who were responsible for it. He said he would raise his voice against the rigging in election in his maiden address to the National Assembly.

Previously on 25 May 2013: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to probe allegations of vote fraud during the recently held elections.

Making a video-link address to thousands of PTI protestors here at D-Chowk Islamabad, Imran Khan said that voters who had turned in record numbers in the polls, had staged sit-ins in different parts of the country as their mandate had been stolen.

Imran Khan appealed to the Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to order a thorough probe into poll rigging allegations to save the democratic process in the country. “Since the returning officers were working under your control, this is your responsibility to probe the allegations. This election is being termed as RO’s election. “This has never happened in the history of Pakistan that ROs were blamed. If such ROs who were involved in rigging are not punished, who would take part in the next elections,” he argued.

He said it was not only the PTI which was crying foul but all political parties were leveling allegations of massive vote fraud and all wanted a fair probe into the allegations.

“We are sure you would investigate the matter for the sake of future of Pakistan. This would help to make future polls transparent. The ECP should also take action,” he said while addressing the CJP.

Reminding of the PTI’s contribution during the judges movement, Imran Khan said that his party workers had struggled for the restoration of the sacked judges.

“We did not came on roads for individuals. We wanted to strengthen the institutions. Probe into poll fraud would help save Pakistan. The voters who had come to vote are holding spontaneous protests,” he asserted.

Khan said that he wanted thumb-impression rechecking in only four constituencies as a litmus test to evaluate the rigging allegations and to set the polling process straight.

While being critical of the former Punjab government for giving stipends to Malik Ishaq of ASWJ/LEJ, Najam Sethi made no attempts to crack down on the terrorists. Instead he managed to release over a hundred of them with the help of right wing courts. http://criticalppp.com/archives/265751
