ECP to decide the fate of 182 minority candidates today

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will decide the fate of 182 minority candidates contesting elections on 10 national assembly seats reserved for minorities today (Friday). The ECP is scheduled to hold scrutiny process of the nomination papers today. The ECP has also invited 24 parliamentarians today (Friday) who were cleared earlier in degree verification process.
Scrutiny of Minority Candidates: According to the officials at ECP, some 182 nomination papers have been filed for the 10 seats of the national assembly reserved for minorities and candidates of almost all the political parties have filed their nomination papers.
Fake Degree Verification: Supreme Court had issued directions to ECP to again hold the verification process of the educational degrees of 27 parliamentarians who were earlier cleared. According to ECP, three of them have already passed away and now 24 remaining parliamentarians are to appear before the ECP for a final review of their educational credentials. Chief Election Commissioner Justice ® Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim and four members of the Commission will seek certain clarifications on their education documents.
Independent Candidates: The last date for withdrawal of the nomination papers is 18th April and ECP had decided to allot election symbols to the independent candidates of the national assembly and four provincial assemblies on 19th April as the lists of the candidates are to be finalised on 18th.
According to the ECP data, some 20,182 nomination papers have been filed for general elections across the country, 6522 have been filed for 342 National Assembly seats and 13,660 nomination papers have been filed for 728 seats of all four provincial assemblies. 3092 nomination papers have been filed in Province of Punjab for 183 including general seats, 35 reserved for women and 10 for minorities. 1496 nomination papers have been filed in Province of Sindh for 75 seats including 61 general seats, 14 reserved for women and 10 for minorities. 1280 nomination papers have been filed in Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for 43 seats including 35 general seats, 8 reserved for women and 10 for minorities. 345 nomination papers have been filed in Province of Balochistan province for 17 seats including 14 general seats, 3 reserved for women and 10 for minorities, 147 nomination papers have been filed for 2 national assembly seats of Federal Capital.
Provinces: For 728 seats of the all four provincial assemblies a total of 13, 660 nomination papers have been filed including 6707 candidates have applied for 371 seats in Punjab, 3628 nomination papers in province of Sindh for 168 seats, 2415 nomination papers for KP provincial assembly’s 124 seats and 912 nomination papers for 65 Balochistan Assembly seats.
