Resemblance between President Asif Zardari and Governor Umar ibn Saad

An image from the Battle of Karbala reenactment: A Yazidi solider kills members of the Prophet’s family

In a couple of his public addresses, President Asif Ali Zardari has presented Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and himself as followers of the path of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandchildren Hussain and Zainab whose heroic struggle against an unjust ruler Yazid is an important part of Islamic history. In this post, we too refer to a historical example of the same era to describe that in the case of President Zardari, he resembles more to Yazid’s General and Governor Umar ibn Saad than anyone else.

Who is Umar ibn Saad?

Umar bin Sa’ad (620-680) was the son of Hazrat Saad ibn Abi Waqas, one of the revered companions of the Prophet (PBUH). He lived in Kufa. Ibn Ziyad, the governor of Yazid in Kufa told him that a movement had emerged against Yazid in Dalam and he should go there and destroy it. He would be given an army of 4,000 men and after he has destroyed this movement he will be appointed as the new governor of the province of Rayye.

When Umar bin Sa`d was ready to leave, Ibn Ziyad changed his mind and said, “Instead of going to Dalam, go to Karbala where Husain is camping and is trying to mobilize the people against Yazid.”

Umar bin Sa’d said, “If I have to go into battle with Imam Husain then I am not willing to go.” Ibn Ziyad said, “You know that I have appointed you the governor of Rayye. I will suspend you and not give you the governorship of Rayye unless you do as I demand.” Umar bin Sa’d asked for sometime to reconsider his options. He thought very deeply and asked his friends and advisers on what he should do. Deep inside he did not want to fight with Imam Hussain and his advisers also told him not to go as Imam Husain was the grandson of the Prophet and had a very high status amongst all Muslims.

He went to Ibn Ziyad and recited a poem saying, “I am not going to fight against Imam Husain and I do not want your governorship of Rayye but if you send so and so he will go and fulfil your orders.” Ibn Ziyad said, “If you do not want to go then go home, I do not require your advice on who to send or who not to send. I am above you in rank and have greater knowledge on these matters than you do.” When the governor said this, Ibn Sa`d was startled; he began to reconsider his position. Finally, he was overcome by worldly greed and decided to take the post (promised Governorship of Raye) and became in charge of Yazid’s army against Imam Hussain. He got his men ready and left for Karbala.

The ancient state of Raiy in Iran was considered of star value in entire Persia. Since the day Sa’ad Ibne Abi Waqqas (father of Umar Ibne Sa’ad) conquered the Persian kingdom, Umar Ibne Sa’ad was desirous of ruling the state. He said while instigating his self on the assassination of Imam Husain:-“So by Allah, I cannot understand two important things about which I am too worried and bewildered. Should I leave the thought of Raiy, or shall I commit the crime of killing Husain. While his killer will be doomed to hell and nothing can save him, the state of Raiy is the comfort of my eyes.” (Kamil Ibn Aseer, Tabari)

Upon reaching Karbala he met Imam Husain and enquired, “Why did you come to Kufa?” Imam Husain replied, “I came to Kufa because I was invited through letters, messages and personal invitations and now that I have reached here you do not want me to be here.” Ibn Sa`d said that he would write a letter to his governor Ibn Ziyad to see what he would like Imam Husain to do. When Ibn Ziyad received the letter from Ibn Sa`d, he wrote back saying, “Tell Imam Husain to swear allegiance to Caliph Yazid. If he does, then we shall come to an agreement but if he does not then we shall fight with him and his people. We will also stop their supply of drinking water.” Imam Hussain refused to swear allegiance to Yazid. Ibn Sa`ad sent 500 of his men with Umar Ibn al-Hajjaj as their leader. On 7th of Muharram he gave orders to his army to stop Imam Husain and his people from obtaining any water from the river. On 10th of Muharram, he ordered his army to slaughter Imam Hussain and other members of the Prophet’s family (Ahlul-Bayt).

The ugly role played by Umar bin Saad in killing Imam Hussain is evidenced clearly in the books of history. Imam Bukhari for example wrote in Tareekh al Sagheer – Volume 1, page 75:

Abu al-Muaali al-Ejli narrated from his father that he said: ‘When Hussain arrived in Karbala, Umar bin Sa’ad was the first individual who cut the ropes of the tents’

Dhahabi whilst writing on the life of Ibn Sa’d states in Siyar Al-Aalam al-Nubla Volume 4 page 349:

“Umar bin Saad, the commander of the troops that fought against al-Hussain [ra], then al-Mukhtar killed him (Umar ibn Saad)”.

A critical study of history of events of Karbala reveals about Umar Ibne Sa’ad that though he obviously was the assassin of Imam Husain, he committed this heinous act under threatening pressure of Ibne Ziyad. Besides, the greed of state at Raiy, was another factor, which instigated him to do what he did. Otherwise he did not wish to be a part of this crime against Imam Hussain and his Shias. But the thoughts and actions of Umar-e-Sa’ad and his submissive obedience to Ibne Ziyad and Yazid are ample proofs that he indeed was a lowly man with mean and base character.

Who is President Asif Zardari?

Asif Ali Zardari (President of Pakistan since 2008) is son in law of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and widower of Benazir Bhutto. Both Z.A. Bhutto and Benazir gave their life in their struggle against Yazid style military dictatorship in Pakistan and were killed by Yazidis hiding in the Army and Jihadist militant organizations. However, in departure from his father-in-law and wife’s great legacy, Zardari has decided to protect his position of power (President of Pakistan) even though it has to be at the cost of thousands of innocent Shia Muslims, hundreds of Sunni Barelvi and moderate Deobandi Muslims and dozens of Ahmadis, Christians and Hindus. As long as Yazidi army (the mentors and protectors of murderers, ie., Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba) are allowing Zardari to sit in the chair of the President of Pakistan, he is least bothered about what is happening to Shias of Quetta, Karachi, Gilgit Baltistan, Parachinar, D.I.Khan, Ahmadis of Sindh and Punjab, Christians of Mardan, Islamabad, Punjab and Hindus of Sindh. Not unlike Umar ibn Sa’ad, Zardari too does not want to be a part of crimes against innocent human beings, however, the love of worldly power and gains has blinded his sense of ethics and justice.

Do not ask Pakistan to do more on terror: Zardari

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari declared Tuesday before the United Nations that his country had suffered enough in its fight against extremist terror and should not be asked to do more.

“No country and no people have suffered more in the epic struggle against terrorism than Pakistan,” he insisted.

“To those who say we have not done enough, I say in all humility: Please do not insult the memory of our dead, and the pain of our living. Do not ask of my people what no one has ever asked of any other peoples,” he said.

“Do not demonize the innocent women and children of Pakistan. And please, stop this refrain to ‘do more’.”

Beginning his address to the UN General Assembly with a denunciation of the recent American-made movie trailer and French cartoons that insulted the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), he demanded that such material be banned worldwide.

Then, speaking next to a photograph of his late wife — Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto, who was murdered by militants — he set about defending the Pakistani people’s record in the war on violent extremism.

Zardari said regular US drone strikes against targets in his country made his task of selling the fight against terror to his people harder, as did the massive increase in Afghan drug exports since the US-led invasion.

“There are a lot of questions that are asked of Pakistan these days,” he said, his voice rising as he warmed to his theme.

“I am not here to answer questions about Pakistan. The people of Pakistan have already answered them. The politicians of Pakistan have answered them. The soldiers of Pakistan have answered them,” he declared.

“We have lost over 7,000 Pakistani soldiers and policemen, and over 37,000 civilians,” he added. “And I need not remind my friends here today, that I bear a personal scar.”

  • On an academic topic, Umar bin Saad is considered a legitimate narrator of Hadith (Siqah Rawi) by Nasibi narrators and historians.

Umar ibn Sad ibn Abu Waqas az-Zuhri was tabein, a person who preferred this world to hereafter, and he was the leader of kufian army which fought against Husayn (r.a).

When imam of jarh and tadeel, Yahya ibn Maeen was asked is Umar thiqat? He answered: How is it possible for him to be thiqat, if he killed Husayn (r.a)? (Mizanul itidal 3/199).

When we check bio of Umar in such books like “Mizanul itidal”,”Tahzeeb at-Tahzeeb” or “Tahzeeb al-Kamal” we can see only the letter sin [ س ] next to his name. And that is mean that Nasai has narrated from him.

omar ibn saad ibn abi waqqas was called Thiqat (Siqah) by Ijli but to be fair an other Sunni scholar disagree and this is

    – Yahya ibn Mu’een who said: how can the killer of Hussein be thiqat ??

but ibn hajar said : he’s truthful!

Modern scholars like Al-Arna’oot authenticated hadiths with omar ibn saad in them without shame

This is the translation of the what the eminent sunni hadith scholar AlIjli stated about umar ibn saad: ”He was the one who killed AlHussain, and he is a trustworthy tabi’i”

Umar ibn Saad (curse of Allah be upon him) was amongst the ancestors of the Salafist-Deobandi sect and their Imams have accordingly relied upon him as a source of deriving religious instruction in the form of Hadiths narrated on his authority.

Ibn Hajr Asqalani writes in Tahdheeb al Tahdheeb Volume 7 page 396:

“Umar Ibn Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri Abu Hafs al-Madani lived in Kufa. He narrated traditions from his father and Abu Said al Khudri. His son Ibraheem and grandson Abu Bakr bin Hafs ibn Umar, Abu Ishaac Al-Sabayee, Ayzaar bin Hareeth, Yazid bin Abi Maryam , Qatada, Zuhri and Yazid bin Habeeb and others have narrated (hadith) from him”

The book can also be downloaded from a Wahabi/Salafi website:
    Tahdeeb al-Tahdeeb, Vol 7 No. 747 – (Cached)

Regarding the level of truthness of this Nasibi ancestor of the Ahle Sunnah, we read that Imam Ibn Hajar Asqalani has declared him ‘Seduq’ in Taqrib al-Tahdib, Volume 1 page 717 whilst Imam Ejli went expressed his satisfaction even further, as we read in Tahdeeb al-Kamal, Volume 21 Biography No. 4240:

وقال أحمد بن عبد الله العجلي كان يروي عن أبيه أحاديث وروى الناس عنه وهو الذي قتل الحسين وهو تابعي ثقة

Ahmad bin Abdullah al-Ejli said: ‘He used to narrate traditions from his father, and the people narrated from him, and he is the one who killed al-Hussain, and he is Thiqa Tabayee’
    Tahdeeb al-Kamal, Volume 21 Biography No. 4240

Imam Dhahabi in his book Mizan al-Etidal, Volume 3 page 198 maintained the following opinion about this Nasibi:

    هو في نفسه غير متهم

“He as a person is not criticized”

One of the most beloved Salafi scholars Shaykh Shoib al-Arnaut in his margin of Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal declared traditions narrated by Umar bin Saad as ‘Hasan’.
    Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, v1, p173 H 1487
    Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, v1, p177 H 1531
    Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, v1, p182 H 1575

Similarly Shaykh Ahmed Shakir also wrote the margin of book Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal and he declared Hadith having Umar bin Saad in the chain as Sahih (see Musnad Ahmed, v3 p51). Imam Ibn Hajar in his book ‘Hidayat al-Rawat’ Volume 2 page 229 has also declared a tradition having this enemy of Imam Hussain (as) in the chain as ‘Hasan’.

  • This is how this greedy man (Umar bin Saad) met his end.

In the year 66 A.H. Mukhtar Ibne Abi Ubaid Saqafi rose to avenge the blood of Imam Husain (a.s.). Tabari has written the events of 66 A.H. in detail including the revolt of Mukhtar and his revenge from the assassins of Imam Husain (a.s.). He wrote: “One day Mukhtar told his companions that tomorrow I shall slay such a man whose legs will be long, whose eyes will be held in his brows. His murder will please the angels and all the believers” (Ibid, pg. 503).
When Umar lbne Sa’ad learnt of Mukhtar’s intention through Uryaan, the son of Hasheem Ibne Al-Aswad Al Nalshee (he was a companion of Mukhtar), he left his home and went to the public bathhouse. At second thought he returned home through ‘Rowhaar’, preferring to remain at home then elsewhere.
When Mukhtar received information that Umar-e-Sa’ad has returned home he sent Abu Umrah to call. When Abu Umrah received the message Umar Ibne Sa’ad rose to follow him. But his robe came in between and he tripped and fell. Abu Umrah beheaded him, covered his head with his robe and threw it in front of Mukhtar (Ibid, pg 504)
As is popularly known, Umar Ibne Sa’ad was killed on 9th Rabiul Awwal 66 A.H

  • I am shocked when I read the author’s name of this article. The emotional followers of Zardari are now comparing him with Yazid and Co???

Well, the sooner the better its for Jiyalas to understand that Zardari is destroying their party’s image. You need serious remediation before elections. Even a blind can see there is no connection between Zardari and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Mr. Bhutto was unmatched guy ever produced by this country besides Quaid-e-Azam and few others. But for God’s sake,, not Zardari….

It even hurts more that he (in fact the party as a whole) remain(s) silent all the time, show no real efforts to curb the killing of our innocent Shiya Pakistani Bros and Sis.

  • You talk one aspect of Zardari, Times of India in todays issue has portrayed him in “KAIDU” character of onging love story between Bilawal and Hina Khar.

Why Zardari hates this ‘love story’

Oho! Love happens. And it has happened. That the love birds happen to be Bilawal Bhutto and Hina Khar, makes this particular ishq-vishq saga most riveting, especially to those of us across the border who have recently been exposed to Khar’s irresistible charms. So irresistible, in fact, that our dapper foreign minister, S M Krishna, who went totally latoo over the lovely lady, behaved like a smitten schoolboy, drooling in her alluring presence and forgetting all about the Indian agenda.

It’s possible he is nursing a broken heart even as young Bilawal (23) and Hina (34) deal with the storm that has been unleashed in Pakistan after a Bangladeshi tabloid ran a juicy expose on the scandal. Bilawal is a bachcha Majnu to Hina’s seasoned Laila. Reports suggest that President Asif Zardari is far from amused by his son’s dangerous liaison with his external affairs minister. Not only is Bilawal the chairman of the ruling Pakistani People’s Party, but he is also the nominated heir to his mother’s and father’s respective legacies. If the love-struck chap does indeed push off to Switzerland to begin a fresh chapter in his life with the begum he adores, the repercussions of such a decision could prove very costly to the government.

The buzz in Islamabad is that old boy Asif plans to rein in his handsome son, and perhaps sack the seductive Khar. Spoilsport! Really Asif miya, we expect you to be far more understanding, given your own personal history. Look at it this way – Bilawal is seriously cute. And loaded. Hina Khar is seriously gorgeous, and married to a loaded guy. Feroz Gulzar, Hina’s smart husband, has rubbished the scoop and called it ‘social media gossip’. Yes, there is an 11-year age difference between Bilawal and the luscious mother of two. So what? Some of the most enduring love stories in the world have been similarly scripted. Think about it – Hina is keen to take the relationship forward, as her love notes to Bilawal establish. Now that their secret is out, there’s no stopping this pyar ki jodi.

‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ is how we put it in Bollywood lingo. Hina has apparently told Asif to keep his nose out of her ‘personal matters’. This is remarkably gutsy of her, considering it was Zardari who found the two in a ‘compromising position’. Known for his fiery temper and happy relationship with guns, it’s a miracle that the president didn’t reach for his favourite weapon when he walked in on the lovers at his official residence. Instead, he tamely asked for Hinaji’s mobile phone records! No point in such a silly exercise, considering the lady has not bothered to deny anything!

The real fun starts now. Will Zardari have the guts to fire his minister-sahiba? What charges can he frame against her? Will he send Bilawal into exile? Where will that leave the PPP? More importantly, since Bilawal is the one with access to his mother’s considerable (but undisclosed) wealth, how can Daddyji kiss the impressive funds goodbye? Unfortunately, the most dispensable member of the cast is Feroz Gulzar. But blowing him away serves no purpose – it will be one more body in an overcrowded morgue.

There is, however, one solution: India could immediately step in and offer a safe haven to the lovebirds. Why go to Switzerland when there is India? We can create an attractive destination for their nikaah. Maybe throw in a luxury houseboat on Dal Lake for the honeymoon. Sarpanches in Omar Abdullah’s state may not be safe. But he’ll take good care of his mehmaans from across the border. After all, when it comes to matters of the heart, Omar knows a thing or two about unbridled passion.

Apart from asylum in India, we could make life a lot more fun for this couple. As neighbours, we owe them this much. Cross-border romanticism is so much more civilized than cross-border terrorism. Hina can happily shop for pearls and more Birkins in our luxury malls. We can get her to host a talk show and perhaps, design a signature fashion collection. Bilawal could consider Bollywood. This is a fabulous, heaven- sent opportunity to strengthen bilateral relationships between the two nations. Hina Khar has already charmed half the country, and reduced S M Krishna to putty. If India can manage to bag two for the price of one, it will rank as a major political coup.

Come on over, you two. Your honeymoon suite is waiting!

  • I don’t understand why the hell people are concerned with this (99%) planted love affair?? /:

Its their personal matter. Let them live their lives according to their will. BB also married to Zardari (unfortunately), but it was her decision. So Leave them alone. We have bigger issues to discuss rather than leg pulling in the name of Pakistan.
