Many of our critical readers know that Malik Riaz, mafia chief of the notorious Bahria Town project, has been able to build his property empire with the help of greedy generals in Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy.

However, not many know that Malik Riaz has active links with certain jihadi and sectarian organisations. For example, after the ouster of the terrorist brigade of Ghazi Abdul Aziz and Ghazi Abdur Rasheed of the Sipah-e-Sahaba from Islamabad’s Lal Masjid, it was Malik Riaz who provided shelter and place to escaped terrorists of the Lal Masjid and built a new headquarter for their future terrorist activities.

Recently, Malik Riaz and his gang’s activities have been observed in unison with terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba (renamed as Jamat-ud-Dawa) in the landslide / lake affected areas of Hunza. Local residents of Hunza have expressed their concern over  the presence of sectarian and jihadi organisations in their area, who are trying to develop jihadi connections in the region in the guise of an ostensibly noble humanitarian aid project.

We reproduce below a recent report published in the Gilgit Baltistan Times:

Jamat-e-Dawa, Bahria Foundation and Disaster hit Area of Gojal, Hunza

Source: GB Times

Gilgit (Ahmed Mukhtar) : Youth of Hunza and Gojal have raised their severe concern over the news and activities of Malik Riaz in Gulmit, Hunza.  They demand the activities of Bahria Foundation to be stopped within a week time. Many youth raised the concerns that ‘Bahria Foundation’ is playing its role on the behest of ‘Jamat-e-Dawa’.

It is to be noted that Jamat-e-Dawa a banned organization by the UN because of its involvement in sectarian activities of violence had attempted to enter into the Hunza and particularly to upper Hunza (Gojal) but proactive response of youth has stopped it from taking any initiatives.

‘Bahria Foundation’ which is being run by notorious businessman Riaz Malik, has said to be one of the main donors of the ‘Jamat-e-Dawa’ in Punjab. Internal sources have established a strong link between funding of ‘Bahria Foundation’ to ‘Jamat-e-Dawa’. Internal sources have also stated that Jamat-e-Dawa which is running many school and Health Centers in Punjab and Kashmir have said to have provided Human Resources to ‘Bahria Foundation’ to establish its center in Gulmit.

The vicious credentials of Riaz Malik itself and the linkage of ‘Bahria Foundation’ with ‘Jamat-e-Dawa’ have aggravated the situation extensively.

The youth have stated their high level of dissatisfaction with the directors of AKHS for Gilgit-Baltistan and Chairperson for National Services. They said that due to their lake of interest and inappropriate action these floundering institutes  such as ‘Jamat-e-Dawa’ and ‘Bahria Foundation’ have got place in the Gulmit where people were desperately looking towards health Facilities. This has been considered a severe blow to the community services. It has emphasized on AKHSP to intensify its activities in the disaster hit Areas of Gojal immediately.

An article by Ayesha Siddiqua about Malik Riaz and his role in the Lal Masjid affair…

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Herald/148427274273#/notes/herald/the-pragmatist/172427547431

In recent years, Malik Riaz of the Bahria Town fame has been in the news more for his charitable works especially for his role as the unofficial benefactor of the Lal Masjid progeny in the aftermath of the 2007 military operation which was carried out to disband and dislodge the Red Mosque brigade. Since then the Rawalpindi-based real estate magnate has not only provided residence to Umme Hassan but also quarters to set up a permanent abode for their female students. The girls’ madrassah is now located in Bahria Town, Rawalpindi. Even Maulana Abdul Aziz lived in a house in Bahria Town after he was released from prison.

Apparently this relationship started after the end of the military operation. Rendered homeless, Aziz’s wife Umme Hassan, who still had 750 undeterred female students to house and educate, was advised to meet Riaz. Once he heard her plight, the baron offered to house her and give her the money to continue educating the young girls. “By the grace of God the Lal Masjid issue is now resolved. Can you not testify to the current peace there?”

At the same time, he has also made himself responsible for the reconstruction of the Lal Masjid. He says he has spent 15 million rupees on its repair and redecoration. That the premises, which is still under construction, carries a huge board announcing this makes it evident that Riaz is not wary of making public his views on this rather controversial issue. Not at all. In fact, he openly supports the Lal Masjid brigade. He calls the 2007 military operation against the mosque “a gross injustice”. But what about the violence by the mosque’s inmates which led to the military operation? “Retaliation is normal. Is it not? When you torture someone, you must expect a violent reaction.” He ends by saying the operation was carried out to “placate America”.

But far more fascinating is the reaction of those at the receiving end. The Lal Masjid and Madrassah Hafsa crowd is not completely enthralled with their benefactor: Aziz is not too happy with the renovation plan for the mosque and the relocation of the madrassah to Rawalpindi. “The new facility in Rawalpindi only accommodates 750 girls while the old madrassah had 3000 female students,” he tells the Herald. The maulana seems caught between acknowledging Riaz’s help and feeling constrained by the fact that control lies with the former now.

Similarly, the caretaker of the building where the seminary students had been shifted, complained that the girls had chopped up all the beds and handed it to her saying that she should give it to her boss — to protest his handling of the situation.

In fact, incidents such as these lend credence to the theories that Riaz helped the Lal Masjid clergy and students to help his ‘friends’ in power. After all, moving the madrassah out of sight from Islamabad to Rawalpindi is tantamount to clipping its wings. Regardless of whether this is true or not, it is Riaz who controls the cleric and his troops and not the other way around.

If this makes one question Riaz’s worldview, other factors drive home the point that he is no traditionalist or fundamentalist. Take his GM (marketing), Ayesha Kashif. Described by many as Riaz’s ‘right-hand man’, she is a key part of his company. Married with children, Ayesha has been with the company for the past seven years. Yet this modern woman, who is often dressed in trouser suits, has been given the responsibility to deal with Lal Masjid and Aziz.

  • Maulana Aziz told the Tribune that the capital administration had accepted all of his demands without any ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’. He thanked Interior Minister Rehman Malik and real estate tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain for their cooperation in resolving the matter. “We are happy because the land was allotted near the graveyard of those killed in the military operation in sector H-11/4,” he said.
The agreement read, “both parties have agreed to use the entire land including 250.56 square yards previously in use of Jamia Hafsa … as solely prayer ground of Markazi Jamia Masjid (Lal Masjid)… This land shall not be used for any other purpose, institutional or residential.”
“Following the directions of Interior Minister, Capital Development Authority (CDA) has allocated two and half acres land for the purpose in sector H-11/4,” Ahmad said.
The civic agency, however, expressed ignorance about the development.
CDA spokesperson Ramzan Sajid said, “We (CDA) have not been intimated by the city administration or any other quarter of the government.” He said that the vacant plot near Lal Masjid belonged to the education ministry as per the CDA record.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner said that CDA’s planning department director-general (DG) was aware of the development and he personally visited the site.
The capital’s Chief Commissioner, Inspector General of police and DC held a series of meetings with Lal Masjid management and finalised the agreement.
“Maulana Aziz wanted to get land in Sector H-8 but the desired plot was not available there,” the DC said.
He said that the mosque management withdrew all other demands after getting the desired plot.
Maulana Aziz said that there was only one demand: to reconstruct Jamia Hafsa, and the administration fulfilled its promise a day before expiration of the deadline set by the cleric last Friday.
Responding to a question, Maulana Aziz said the interior ministry allocated land and CDA has no issue with it.

  • The petrol chainsaw can be an animal, however in the hands of a confident and
proficient user no job is too big or small. Emissions laws are presently resulting in cleaner, more efficient gas models that are also easier to start.
The use of chainsaw may seem very simple and even very exciting
